Intro-

The learning communities program equips students for success by networking students with peers who have similar majors. this is done in order to give students the skills necessary to achieve academic excellence through the personal connection developed with the professors due to the small class room sizes, allowing the students to feel more comfortable during group discussions (because the students develop an inevitable bond with one another due to the fact that we have several classes with one another, and through classroom collaboration, which allows our work load to be slightly less vigorous because the professors work together to make certain assignments that are relevant to both courses.

Body1

the personal connection developed with the professors due to the small class room sizes

The learning communities gives professors the opportunity to learn the academic strengths and weaknesses of each student which allows them to properly address and issues that the student may have. and on the other hand the learning communities program allows the students to learn what goals and expectations the instructor has for them.

Body2

…allowing the students to feel more comfortable during group discussions (because the students develop an inevitable bond with one another due to the fact that they have several classes together)

Through learning communities student participation and accountability is increased. Students participate more openly and freely in groujp discussions due to the fact that they are not intimidated by one another because they have developed an overall bond as a class. Because of this bond students are more likely to hold each other accountable when the notice declines in a peer’s attendance of grades.

Body3

…through classroom collaboration, which allows our work load to be slightly less vigorous because the proffesors work together to make certian assignments that are relavent to both courses.

Since the instructors in the learning communities work together they are more aware of the work load that we have in oujr other classes which allows them to collaborate assignments in an effort to keep ujs from getting over wheelmed with tedious work loads

Conclusion

the learning communities program is a great asset to CSU. it allows students to have a smoth transition from high school to college, and guides the student toward academic success.

Essay #4 brainstorming

1. What activity or organization have you most enjoyed at Central?

the activity that i enjoyed the most here at Central is the bible study that takes place on thursday in the education building, is activity is most enjoyable because it encourages me and reasures me in the fact that there are people who have the same struggles in life as i do, and that they are striving to become more Christlike throughout their daily lives.

2. part of campus life has been difficult for you?

the part of campus life that has been most difficult for me has been the registration process and having to meet up with my advisor to plan my academic future and going to cash management to ensure that all of my funds are in order, because  in high school all of those aspects are taken care of by faculty and staff.

3. What ONE thing would lead you to recommend Central to a friend still in high school?

one thing that would lead me to recoment Central to a high school friend would be the small class rooms and personal learning environments which makes it possible to have a relationship with the proffesors thus making it easy for the students to have direct access to their professors for help or to simply answer questions.

4. What ONE piece of advice would you give to someone planning to attend Central?

one piece of advice that i would give to someone who is planning to attend Central would be to stay focused on the ultimate goal (graduation) and dont get distracted by people of the opposite sex or parties or various other things that tend to knock students off track.

Essay #3 Draft #1

Persistence

To be persistent means to stand strong and endure in spite of the many trials and tribulations that may come one’s way. America and the “American dream” are built on the basis of persistence. In life persistence is the stepping stone of human survival. With out persistence it would be impossible for us to master certain simple task such as speaking or walking. With out persistence it also would be impossible to do certain things such as develop a new hobby or defeat the odds when everyone says it is impossible. It is a known fact that one must persevere to reach his or her goals in life. Our forty fourth president elect Barack Obama, mayor of Newark, New Jersey Cory Booker and the oldest voter Miss. Ann Nixon Cooper are all examples of how their persistence allowed them to be winners in the game of life.

Barack Hussein Obama was born on august 4th in 1961 to Barack Obama Sr. and Ann Dunham. His father was a native of Nyanza Province, Kenya. And his mother was a Wichita, Kansas native. His multicultural background makes him the perfect example of the all American melting pot, and shows the reality of the endless possibilities of the country that our ancestors worked so hard to make the home of equality.

Barack Obama began his run for presidency twenty one months ago with a miniscule budget and a gigantic dream. In the beginning all odds were against him primarily due to his race (even I myself wasn’t sure if America was ready to put the “race card” away and embrace an African American as president). Another thing that posed as a threat to Obama’s presidency was the fact that a republican has been in office for the past 8 years and the fact that there was a majority of republicans in the senate. These two factors show that it America was developing a trend in voting for republican candidates rather than democrats. In spite of these obstacles Obama persisted and endured the many hardships that came his way during his run to become president. Another obstacle that tested Obama was the presidential primaries. In spite of the fact that Obama came out as an overall winner of the primaries, he still lost some of the major determinant states such as Ohio, and Florida to his opponent Hillary Clinton.

It is safe to say that Obama endured one of the most difficult and globally publicized presidential elections that the world has ever seen. And at the end of his long adventure on the night of November 4, 2008 Obama showed the world that persistence pays off as he presented his victory speech, as the forty fourth president elect of the United States of America.

Cory Booker was born on April 27 in 1969 to Cary and Carolyn Booker. He is an alma mater of Yale, Stanford, and Oxford universities. Cory Booker is an ambitious man who strives to be pure and clean in his actions, words and choice of life. This is directly reflected through his vegetarian diet, and drug and alcohol free lifestyle. Cory Booker had a generally advantaged life growing up in an upper middle class neighborhood in a home with two parents who loved him dearly. But his run a mayor proved to be much different than the simple life that Booker was accustomed to.

Threats, slander, cheating, and misuse of power are all tactics that Cory Booker’s opposition Sharpe James used in his effort to gain the votes necessary to be reelected as mayor of Newark, New Jersey in 2002. By watching the film Street Fight I was able to see that James’ major campaigning strategy was the use of mudslinging in an effort to make his opponent look bad. James used Booker’s light skin complexion against him by making the accusation that Booker was white. One of James’ most extreme lies was his saying that Cory was a republican in spite of the fact that Cory is a lifelong democrat. Booker’s campaign strategies were quite the opposite of his opponent’s, his goal was to run a clean race. As opposed to using lies to make his opponent look bad, he walked the streets and took various actions to improve the community in an effort to allow the citizens of Newark to see his true character and leadership capability.

In spite of the fact that Booker ran a clean good race, his efforts weren’t enough to win the votes of the citizens of Newark, and he lost the race to become mayor. In spite of his defeat Cory did not give up, he was persistent! Booker waited four long years with the same big dream of becoming mayor of Newark, New Jersey in mind. And due to his hard work and persistence, in 2006 all of Cory Booker’s efforts paid off as he was elected mayor.

Ann Nixon Cooper is the United State’s oldest voter. Ann Nixon Cooper was born in Shelbyville, Tennessee on January 9, 1902. Cooper has lived in the United States for more than a century, which means that she has seen some of our countries greatest accomplishments and some of its greatest pit falls. Cooper has lived through the great depression, World War II and the terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Centers. She has also lived to see the first man land on the moon, Martin Luther King’s presentation of his “I have a dream” speech and the first African American president of the United States.

Ann Nixon Cooper will always be remembered as the oldest voter in the United States. But I am sure that she remembers a time when she had obstacles much greater than age that kept her from voting. As Obama mentioned in his presidential victory speech “someone like her couldn’t vote for two reasons – because she was a woman and because of the color of her skin”. In 1920 Cooper was able to witness the right of suffrage being granted to women but there was still one thing that was kept her from voting (her race). That was until in 1965 African Americans were given complete and total suffrage.

Cooper lived in America during its best and worst times. If it wasn’t for her persistence and faith in her country, she wouldn’t of been able to see Barack Obama, an African American man win presidency, which is something that she had never seen in her 106 years alive.

Persistence, faith, diligence, the never giving up spirit that is instilled in all of these brilliant people, allowed them to become winners in the game of life. Persistence is what set them apart from others who may have had similar goals but gave up in the face of opposition. Persistence is the “Yes I can” attitude that guides us through our lives. Persistence is the extra burst of strength and motivation that allows us to keep moving towards our goals. Obama has it, Booker has it, Cooper has it…Do you have what it takes to persevere when the odds are against you? If yes, then you already have what it takes to succeed in life.

Virtual Class 11/5

1. Identify which option/ genre you plan to use.

One thing in the film that made me angry was the use of James’ power for evil. I.e. he used his power to intimidate, force and threaten voters into feeling obligated to vote for him.

2. Draft a tentative thesis ex: “I want to argue…”.

I plan to argue the fact that we as a people must find a way to do something to make sure that people with high rankings or high places of power don’t take advantage of their power and use it for the purpose of evil.

3. Describe several examples of Rhetorical Appeals.

~Ethos

-Obama has proven that he is a great candidate for presidency because he has voted in favor of the people during his career as senator

-its good to listen to academic advice given by professors because of their experience in their fields.

~Logos

-So far, Obama has 103 of the electoral college votes while McCain only has 34, there for it is likely that Obama may win the presidencial election this year.

-Gabrielle Union says that proactive works…therefore it probably works

~Pathos

          - violence hurts not only the victim but the community in which it takes place

what makes you angry or gives you hope about this presidential election and why?

Things that make me angry about this election

~ The fact that people are voting based on race sex and background instead of putting in effort to find out information about both candidates that will be useful during their presidency

Things that give me hope about this election

~ The fact that the candidates are both zealous about seeing a change in our declining economy

~ the fact that regardless of who wins, this is still going to be a dramatically different presidential election because were either going to have an African American president or a female vice president in office for the first time

similarities and differences between Newak’s 2002 election and the 2008 presidential election

The similarities between Newark’s election in 2002 and the presidential election today are that they both have one candidate that is old, experienced, and trusted. and they both have a candidate that is young charismatic and less experienced. Another similarity is that they both hold huge rallies in which the speak to citizens in order to inform them of their plans to change the community for the best. The differences are the the methods in which the candidates try to get votes. since the presidential election is on a much larger scale, the candidates don’t go door to door introducing themselves in an effort to get votes. instead they use various means of large scale media (T.V., radio, Internet) to get to the people. Although the candidates for mayor used some of the same publicity tactics, they were on a local scale as opposed to a national level. Another difference is the fact that although the candidates in both cases use “mudslinging” as a method of putting down their opponent to make themselves look good, the level of accuracy in the statements made about the candidates by their opponents is likely to contain more validity. where as in the election to be mayor in Newark the candidates were able to make outrageous accusations with faith in the fact that the press and citizens would simply take their comments as if they were facts.
