The similarities between Newark’s election in 2002 and the presidential election today are that they both have one candidate that is old, experienced, and trusted. and they both have a candidate that is young charismatic and less experienced. Another similarity is that they both hold huge rallies in which the speak to citizens in order to inform them of their plans to change the community for the best. The differences are the the methods in which the candidates try to get votes. since the presidential election is on a much larger scale, the candidates don’t go door to door introducing themselves in an effort to get votes. instead they use various means of large scale media (T.V., radio, Internet) to get to the people. Although the candidates for mayor used some of the same publicity tactics, they were on a local scale as opposed to a national level. Another difference is the fact that although the candidates in both cases use “mudslinging” as a method of putting down their opponent to make themselves look good, the level of accuracy in the statements made about the candidates by their opponents is likely to contain more validity. where as in the election to be mayor in Newark the candidates were able to make outrageous accusations with faith in the fact that the press and citizens would simply take their comments as if they were facts.
